Learning & Innovation Center - 17.007

Program

Complete mission for C & S engineering.

Concept

The special purpose of this new building program is to connect two universities, ULB / VUB, that exist on the same campus. The LIC will act as a motor to bring them together and encourage cooperation in the international context. The site currently feels like a back area but it will be transformed into the lively heart of the campus. The building is compact, but nevertheless provides a lot of space by means of a stacked arrangement of auditoriums, seminar rooms, formal and informal meeting places, workshops, libraries and offices. A roundabout in front of the building will connect all soft circulation flows and create links between the interior and the exterior of the building. It is included in the landscaping plan.

Specific features

The area formed beneath is foreseen as a café terrace, the curved side slopes functioning like an amphitheatre, inviting people to rest and relax. The building will be in use 24 hours / 7 days a week and it is energy neutral. The structure of the building consists of reinforced concrete floor slabs and mixed steel-concrete columns, chosen for their reduced impact. There are two distinct zones in the building. The first being a generally double height circulation zone for the building, with large span ribbed floors. The second zone accommodates the different functional spaces (library, workplaces, offices), here intermediate columns are used to reduce the spans and permit the use of a flat slab structure without down stand beams. Reinforced concrete walkways ensure the links between the universities and the new building.
