Concept

Numerous reconstruction works have been undertaken between the villages of Ooijen and Wanssum (Noord-Limburg) with the aim of controlling and minimizing the risk of river inundation. The old branch of the river Maas has been reactivated by transforming dikes and creating two flood-water canals. Ney & Partners is missioned for the architectural and structural design of several infrastructure works, that is, 4 bridges, 2 tunnels and 1 bicycle bridge. The bicycle bridge crosses the new Rondweg at the hintersection with the Meerlosebaan. Given that the trench profile of the Rondweg in the Hoogterras must remain a strong element, the bicycle bridge is designed as a light and minimalist object with a barely visible abutment.

Specific features

The laser-cut handrails are integrated into the structural design of the steel bridge as a load bearing element. The span between supports is 36.00 m and the clear width 3.5 m. The deck of the bridge is in timber. The vertical clearance underneath the bicycle bridge was increased from 4.5 m to 6.0 m to reduce the accidental load due to the impact of a vehicle against the structure. The deck is calculated to resist an impact of the 1MN. The abutments are constructed with prefabricated concrete panels. A specific texture with horizontal stripes was designed for an optimal fitting in context.
