Program

Complete mission for civil and structural engineering according the BIM process.

Concept

The 'Herman Teirlinck Building' is an office complex located on the 'Tour & Taxis' site in Brussels. It houses the new administrative center of the Flemish Government (VAC). The VAC-building in Brussels consists of a 6 level podium surmounted by a a tower of 60 meters. The project comprises 46,000 sqm. of usable space, complemented by 2 basement levels for archives and a parking lot for 311 cars.

Specific features

The offices are organized around spacious glazed inner courtyards. This offers a lot of natural light and pleasant views between the different departments. Like the iconic adjacent Royal Depot, the new project features a semi-public covered gallery with public facilities such as a restaurant, auditoriums and reception areas. The reinforced concrete beam and column structure is organized around a 7,2m square grid. Over the covered gallery where there are wide spans and cantilevers, particularly at the entrances, steel frameworks are used to carry the loads.

Distinctions

In accordance with the Design Manual of the Flemish Government the Brussels' VAC project achieved a 4-star rating for its exemplary design in terms of durability. With an E-level of only E34 it meets the Flemish limit for an 'almost energy-neutral building'. It will also meet the requirements of the Passive Building Standard of the Brussels Region.
