Stokkel Footbridge - 00.020

Program

Complete design as project designer

Concept

Situated on the old disused railway line this "green" pedestrian bridge lies in line with the footbridge over the Tervurenlaan. The bridge has a moderate span but its typology and use of materials are highly peculiar.

Specific features

The chosen typology is hybrid and can be interpretated in several ways: on the one hand as a classic truss-beam with triangular cross-section and the other hand as a stayed structure with a high connection between the masts. This arrangement allows to refine the tenstile bars to a maximum and allows the sun to give a filigree aspect to the structure. The upper chord is realised as a massive and rough Douglas tree trunk. The structural principles with the T-connections are based on elements that were developed for the Gedinne Tower. The bridge deck is made of solid structural timber.
