Concept
For the refurbishment of the main square Grote Mart in Turnhout, architectural office Stramien works jointly with Ney & Partners at the design of the canopies. The full structural design of the columns forms part of that task.
The function of the canopies is twofold. On the one hand, they are a scenographic instrument. The open parts allow roses to grow. On the other hand, they form bus shelters for De Lijn.
The lighting for the public square is integrated in the columns supporting the canopies.
Specific features
The canopies are executed from folded steel sheets with stiffeners. An evolutive pattern is laser cut into the steel to create 3 zones: pergola-transition-canopy. Each zone is 11m long.
Distinctions
The urban redevelopment of the main square Grote Mart in Turnhout has been won the Prijs voor de Publieke Ruimte 2011 (Public Space Awards 2011) in the category "proposed projects".
