IJdock bridge - 10.036

Program

Architecture and stability

Concept

A new peninsula will be constructed nearby the Central Train Station of Amsterdam. Its surface is equal to two football fields on which an underground carpark, Law Courts, commercial spaces, a hotel apartments and a marina will be build. A mobile footbridge with a span of 105m will connect the peninsula with the Westerdoksdijk.

Specific features

The bridge is constructed out a single bended 30mm thick steel plate. The form of the deck is inspired on the elegant movement of a bird wing and gives the plate its needed stiffness. The walking surface is decorated with a routed wavy pattern. The pattern is also the guide for the evacuation of the water. Those perforations make a subtle link to the presence of the water underneath the bridge en enforce the relation between the passer-by and the bridge. A very transparent steel parapet accentuates the human presence on the bridge.
