Footbridge Stalhille - 02.011
Program
Complete study as designer of the project.
Concept
Since the Middle ages, the channel that links Oostend with Ghent, has been an important regional economic traffic way. From 1570 until present, not less than 10 bridges have spanned this waterway. The last mobile bridge was demolished in the 70's and replaced by a temporary Bailey-bridge. This project aims to replace the temporary bridge by a mobile pedestrian bridge of 26m span. The bridge deck has a width of 3m.
Specific features
The proposed typology is innovative. The chosen system of kinematics keeps the same statical system in open as well as in closed position: in both cases the bridge is a simply supported beam. This system is raised by 4 balancing arms with a counter weight. The project testifies of structural minimalism and simple geometry in the rural framework of the Flemish landscape.
