Pedestrian Bridge Fransman - 08.020

Program

Design of a new pedestrian bridge according to the data of the study document.

Concept

The demolition and reconstruction of the bridge Fransman, situated in the Leopold district of Laken, Brussels. The construction must be accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Specific features

The current urban situation of the location around the Fransmanstreet is very complex. The street is divided in two in a brutal way by the present train rails, the topography is difficult and the set up and position of the existing ramps make it clear that there is no good organized urban space. This location has nevertheless also some good elements: for example the interesting views that you can observe between the different streets of the district. The office Ney & Partners has in collaboration with MS-architects (www.ms-a.be) proposed the following concept: they want to create a bridge that resolves the problems of the current urban situation. The pedestals have to create a new public space and must allow a better accessible and legible access to the bridge and the site. The bridge it’s unique form is a derivative of this concept. A clear and direct access from the Fransman- and Stevenstreet created through the integration of some stairs. The bicyclists and people with a reduced mobility can cross the train rails over by using the new ramps. The pedestrian bridge is made out of folded plates of steel, which can be prefabricated and are easily to set up. Structural: the bridge is a long beam in a U-form, its vertical body is also used as a parapet. The lights are placed in the upper part of the flange.
