Ring Antwerp - 05.022
Program
The ring-road around the city of Antwerp will be completed. The proposed project is a synergy between contemporary engineering and a strong urbanistic and landscaping vision.
Concept
With the proposed curved suspension bridge an answer is given to the engineering-technical requirements in a larger context of urban design, planning and landscape design. This results in a contemporary iconic structure, with an appropriate image-value. The form of the pylons follow from its specific geometric constraints, yet create a visual spectacle of interweaving suspension cables. Only where the pylons and suspension cables carry the bridge, it floats above water. Where the bridge spans are supported by pillars on both sides, it finds itself above land. This clarity generates a transparent and distinct reading. Pushing for homogeneity and uniformity throughout the entire project is key to maintain a level of continuity throughout any project of this scale. This applies to construction methods, but just as well to the experience of a trip that for most will only last for 10 minutes.
