Rogier - 06.050

Program

Complete study of the structure.

Concept

The central structure located on the new Rogier square is a large, round canopy made of steel and glass. The canopy covers the entrance of the subway, bus stations and a part of the road. In order to reduce interference with existing elements on the site, the chosen typology reduces the number of columns so as to avoid a barrier to the existing environment. The canopy rests on a central shaft which also constitutes an architectural focal point in the square.

Specific features

The canopy measures 66m in diameter and the central shaft has a reduced diameter of 16m. The shaft contains a series of vertical elements that transfer the loads through the underground levels to the foundations. The canopy surface has a slope of 10%, the external edge being 5m higher than the internal edge. The conic form of the canopy means that the whole structure works as a shell instead of working as a cantilever. This results in an important reduction in the deflection at the canopy edges as well as a reduction in the bending moment, leading to an overall lighter structure.
