Program

Complete study of the central canopy (geometry and stability), and linear shelters

Concept

The central canopy of the project aims to be a new icon in an already iconic environment. The canopy covers the cross-roads where tramways and pedestrians meet. The structure is conceived as a thin aluminium shell held by 7 columns. The shape of the shell, and the positioning of the columns is a direct consequence of a balancing exercise between pedestrian comfort, integration of functionality, and minimal material usage. To maximally express the structure all secondary objects underneath the covering will be integrated in the design of the columns.

Specific features

The geometry of the canopy is a cut-out of a 57.5m radius sphere. This conceptual shell will be constructed as an assembly of straight elements, which form a grid of almost square cells (1.2m x 1.2m). The spherical geometry results in varying angles for the nodes, resolved in the tolerances and design of the type-node. The ribs are extruded aluminium T-shaped profiles that will hold the aluminium roof cladding.
